Legacy Season 4 Episode 9: "Church and State"
When people talk about television or film as a visual medium, they are usually referring to a beautiful image or a striking composition. But did you know what is also an important part of visual storytelling? Simple reaction pictures.
Turning any given "Succession" episode into a radio drama doesn't require much restructuring, since most of the show's "action" is probably in the dialogue. But are we missing those reaction shots? What these actors can do with their faces - and what directors and editors can do with how and where they are - is sublime.
This week, Logan Roy's family and colleagues gathered at his funeral to put aside all grudges and pay tribute to the great man. "Today is today," Kendall insists (a phrase that should be engraved on the family crest of the ever capricious and opportunistic Royce). Throughout the day, the men talked a lot - especially during the service, when one Roy after another got up to say a few words. Again, much of what really happens in the story is in the reaction.
Even before the funeral, the whole atmosphere of the event was destabilized by the post-election unrest in the streets of New York (which Tom described as "a bit of Tiananmen"). Kendall is furious when his ex-wife Lava (Natalie Gold) takes their children out of town for their safety. When he learns that his assistant Jess (Julianna Canfield) plans to quit, he is almost as annoyed that Jared Mencken and ATN have unleashed potentially violent actions. "You don't know how things are going to turn out, and it's naive," Kendall complained.
But when everyone enters the church, the atmosphere softens. The tone was set by Lady Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter), mother of sibling Roy, who offered to ask Kerry - who brought lawyers in case anyone tried to stop her from attending the funeral - to sit by her side, Marcia andlegendary sally ann(Caroline calls Sally Ann "my Kerry") These ladies are all in love with a very difficult man; Kerry sobs as Marcia reaches out to pull him back.
Then the service started, amazingly. Logan's fiery liberal brother Ivan (James Cromwell) defies his grandson Greg's attempts to keep him from the pulpit. Ewan begins by sharing some touching stories about Logan: of how they comforted each other as boys crossing the Atlantic during World War II; Was brought home from the boarding school he hated. With that said, Ivan ends up burning Logan's property, saying that his brother contributed to "a certain poverty among men." (Greg, ever dim-witted, said after his grandfather sat down, "You have a tough attitude."
This is where reaction shots really start to become a factor. During Ewan's knockout, we see Roman looking sad. He arrived feeling eerily optimistic and planned to deliver a truly grown-up tribute to his father in front of some of the most important people in America after his election night coup. But Ewan's commanding, authoritative words affected him. Roman never had that kind of spotlight; now his siblings expect him to "tell the other side of Logan Roy's story."
he can not. Roman started with his usual "big, big man" speech, but then froze and begged his family to save him. He breaks down in front of everyone, points to the coffin with his father and whines, "Get him out." Another earth shattering performance from Kieran Culkin. (It's Gerry's face to watch out for during Roman's breakdown. She looks really sad for her former protégé).
So Kendall filled in; since he had extensive experience in putting together sentences that his social peers could understand, he did a good job. He acknowledged the pain his father may have caused, but he also celebrated how Logan made "a bloody, complicated life" happen. "If we can't match his energy, God knows it's going to be dull and dreary," he said, as both Mencken and Lukas Matsson spoke with seemingly grudging admiration at him. Despite the gossip about how Jeremy Strong's on-set nervousness frustrates his actors, scenes like this on screen turn out to be so riveting and real.
Shiv followed with an impromptu eulogy of my own, mostly focusing on how awful Logan would have been when she and her siblings were kids. Like Culkin and Strong, Sarah Snook seized her big moment and played the speech to fit right in the middle of the "It's a funny story about a grumpy old man" story and allegations of abuse. Shiv calls his father "tough on women" - the subsequent shot of Kendall reminding him of his problems with Rava and Jess.
It's funny that Shiv made such harsh comments about Logan's parenting after she said those words to Matsson before the funeral. Recalibrating their strategy for the incoming Mencken presidency, they decided to show that they could handle the neo-fascists. Step 1: Promise that GoJo-Waystar will have an American CEO...like Shiv. But when Matsson mentioned he'd heard rumors about her pregnancy, she concocted a version of motherhood where she "sent emails through her vain c-section" and her child "never got to see her." This is aggressive Logan style.

After the funeral, the battle for Waystar began. Kendall used the momentum of his tribute to allow Hugo to begin leaking to the press about Matsson's shaky position on the Waystar board. ("You'll be my dog, but the leftovers on the dinner table will be in the millions," he tells Hugo about the state of their business relationship. "Wow," Hugo replies.) He also persuades his father's former bodyguard/ Colin the Confessor comes to work for him. He's also becoming more and more Logan-y.
But as it turns out, Shiv's performance is brilliant. When Kendall cornered Mencken at the post-funeral reception, he realized he might have miscalculated, and the presumptive new-elect hinted that ATN might need him more than the other way around. “I thought you were the sound system,” Mencken told Kendall. “Now you have to choose the track?” It doesn't help that Kendall is interrupted by an embarrassing string of family members: first Greg, then Roman (Mencken: “It's the grim cry!”), then Kang agrees.
No wonder Mencken seemed relieved as he chatted with Shiv and Matsson, who looked ... well, cooler. They both encouraged him to think broadly, with Shiv reminding him that Logan was more about "money, wind and gossip" than ideological purity, while Matsson talked about the potential benefits of adapting to "thought leadership" technology (including "funny" )bro. So, going into the "Succession" finale next week, Kendall and Schiff appear to be in the right light in the race to become the new Waystar CEO.
So where is Rome? Still shaken after his funeral disaster. When Kendall enlisted his brother's help in the upcoming chess game with Schiff, he directly accused Roman of screwing everything up. Roman then left the reception and stormed a protest march that took place outside, where he was shouted at and beaten by angry leftists.
It suits him well. When it comes to reactions, Roman would always rather people look at him with anger than pity - or worse, indifference.

Here's another brilliant reaction shot: When Kendall talks about how Logan "made up" him and his siblings for the funeral, the editors cut to Lady Caroline looking a little pissed off.
(Video) The Shameless Scene That People Think Went Too FarThere wasn't much gut-wrenching comedy this week, though Roy's kids had some good riffs while looking at Logan's grave, a beautiful shrine he bought from an internet pet vendor. . Shiv called the seller "cat food Ozymandias," asked if her father was "in a bidding war with Stalin and Liberace," before suggesting the tomb could be a tax break because "technically it's a residence."
The tomb has enough room for several family members, should any of Logan's children wish to spend eternity with their troubled patriarch. Connor was open that he didn't mind the top bunk. Kendall hesitated, then said, "I had trouble finishing my scotch with him." And Rome? "He made me breathe funny," he said.
Shiv, worried about what little she knows about her father's character - or probably doesn't want to know - asks Frank and Carl, "How bad is dad?" They assure her that he is "a salty dog, but a good egg." and added, "What you see is what you get." So after she left, Carl half-shrugged, looked at Frank, and asked, "Okay?" Frank half-heartedly: "Yes."
Shiv, as the funeral ends and the cemetery prepares his father: 'I'd love to know how he got out of this.'
